Non Destructive Testing Systems CT Systems / Konoscope

The Konoscope volumetric CT system combines the high resolution of 2-D scanners with the speed of 3-D scanners. Unlike conventional CT systems, which slowly take data one slice-at-a-time, the Konoscope uses a cone beam of x rays to acquire data from an entire volume at one time. As a result, CT inspection time is significantly reduced. In one day, three parts can be scanned and 512 x 512 x 512 volumetric images produced. Even a 1024 x 1024 x 1024 scan of one part can be completed in one day. With the Konoscope, Rapiscan Systems offers a variety of 2-D and 3-D image reconstruction algorithms, including back projection, Feldkamp, and helical Feldkamp. The Konoscope is capable of supporting the most demanding CT applications, such as metrology and reverse engineering, which require data with the highest accuracy and resolution.

The Konoscope 160/200, is a fully-shielded cabinet system measuring 8-ft. long x 3-ft. wide x 6-ft. high. The Konoscope 130/40 can scan objects up to 40-mm (1.6-in.) in diameter with 0.015-mm resolution. Features of these Konoscopes are listed in the table below.

The Konoscope was used to inspect a chambered nautilus shell. The figure below presents the resulting volumetric image of the shell and a CT slice showing its familiar internal structure.
